Jakub is sitting in his usual spot on the short wall behind the deli with a cigarette between his lips. He doesn’t appear quite as imposingly gigantic today as I remember from my first meeting, but he still looms large enough to make me think he’s the Hulk to my Bruce Banner. If Bruce Banner was a sexy redhead, naturally.

“I hear you and my ciotka have been busy,” he says as smoke flows from his nostrils.

“She’s been showing me the sights.”

Jakub’s lips ripple and expose a flash of teeth. “She says you know how to fight.”

“I’ve been learning a few things.”

An eyebrow arches. “Someone is teaching you?”

“A girl’s gotta look out for herself.”

“The cop?” he asks. “Your friend.”

This time I show some teeth, but it’s not all friendly. I’m not big on being spied upon. “Among others.”

Jakub takes the hint and shrugs. “Like you say. Best to be safe.”

I pull out a piece of paper, but Jakub holds up a hand to stop me. “I have already seen the names. I will help where I can, but that is a different world and those men are not familiar to me. Eddie is a businessman, but he sticks to gambling. No drugs. No smuggling. No whores.”

“You move in different circles,” I say with only a touch of cynicism.

Jakub shows me his teeth again. “Exactly.”

I unfold the piece of paper to show it doesn’t contain a list of names, but rather a composite photo. I hand it over.

“Just in case your circles ever accidentally overlap, I’m wondering if you’ve come across this face?”

Jakub studies it carefully before looking up. “Who is this?”

“We think he may be the one who triggered the bomb inside Ania, the young Polish girl who was killed yesterday.”

A low growl rumbles in the large man’s throat. “It’s not a face I recognize, but neither is it one that I’ll forget if I do come across him. You think he’s Polish?”

“I couldn’t even guess. The man who smuggled Ania into the country claimed she was stolen from him, but unfortunately he’s no longer around for me to do any follow-up.”

“Stolen?”

“From the docks during unloading. There have been reports of other women disappearing, too. Perfect crime really. All the women are already illegal and who are the smugglers going to complain to?”

“If this is true—” Jakub stabs the photo. “He will have a price on his head. Red Swan, among a few others, controls all smuggling. If he does not have a price-tag, then that tells you something else.”

My eyes burn with eagerness. “Could you find out?”

Jakub shrugs and nods.

“How long will—” My phone rings before I can finish the question. I recognize the number. “Is it okay if I take this?”

Jakub shrugs again and digs in his pocket for a fresh cigarette. He lights it off the stub of his old one.

“Mr French,” I say. “What have you got?”

“Ah, Miss Flynn. Your man has left the bar and is returning from whence he came, which appears to be an apartment complex of rather low bearing and shady repute.
